A professional with over two decades of experience encompassing academics and administration at premier business schools in India and working at large corporations in India at GE Capital, iGATE and HSBC providing him with a rich perspective of how academia and industry interact.

Apart from being engaged in professional training and consulting, he teaches at IIM Udaipur, IIM Visakhapatnam, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Indore, He is a member of the Board of Governors at IIM Raipur. He has also taught at SP Jain’s Singapore and Dubai campus.

He contributes to a regular column for Economic Times on CSR and Sustainability. Since 2014 he has led an annual research study that ranks India’s top companies on CSR and sustainability. The Economic Times and Mint have carried stories on the research study.

Utkarsh has published and presented papers at national and international conferences. His publication has also found a place in the United Nation’s Global Compact Yearbook 2014, CSR Compendium of Economic Times, Vikalpa (IIMA journal), authored cases with Ivey Publishing and others. His book Balance: Responsible Business for the Digital Age, published by Westland, released in December 2018.

Utkarsh obtained his Post Graduate Diploma in Management (MBA) from the Indian Institute of Management Lucknow. He has a Fellow Title (Doctorate) from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, where his thesis proposal won the outstanding thesis proposal award instituted by the Industrial Finance Corporation of India. Before joining IIM Ahmedabad for the Fellow Programme, he was with Uptron India Ltd. at Lucknow for three years where he managed several functions including project appraisal, taxation, fixed deposit schemes and audit management.

He spent three years at IIM Lucknow where he taught Post Graduate Programme (PGP) courses in Corporate Finance, Corporate Valuation and International Finance. The Valuation course developed by him was considered as one of the first in India. He was part of Management Development Programmes (MDPs) on varied themes including Financial Management, Working Capital Management, Business Process Re-engineering, Enterprise Resource Planning, and Information Technology for Librarians and Electronic Commerce. He was also involved in key academic and administrative committees. He was actively engaged in the CAT test construction.

After his stint at IIM Lucknow, he was a faculty at IIM Bangalore. He taught PGP and PGSEM courses on Corporate Finance, Valuation and Mergers & Acquisitions. He also taught doctoral students. He conducted and directed MDPs on a variety of themes for open participants well as for corporations such as Reliance and L&T. He continued with CAT test construction work.

At GE Capital International Services (GECIS; now part of Symphony), he worked in the domain of data analytics and modelling. Here he built a pricing model for public finance bond insurance for a US based company, Financial Guaranty Insurance Company (FGIC). He initiated a system for tracking model performance and triggering alerts to review and update the existing model.

After GECIS, he moved to iGATE Global Solutions Ltd. (iGATE). The Financial Markets Group at iGATE is involved in the outsourced financial research space. Here he was in training and transitioning role. He has built a training programme for the division, transitioned process for a bulge-bracket US-based investment bank and was involved in conducting research and presenting papers.

At HSBC, as Vice President of the Research department, Utkarsh designed, developed and ran a training programme that was considered as one of the best and well-organised in the industry. The programme prepared management graduates for roles in equity research. He also conducted training programmes for international participants at London and Hong Kong. He initiated the model validation programme and managed the team that worked on it. He set up and led the campus hiring programme which resulted in over 50% of the total staff strength coming through campus hiring. He managed the best practices and the quantitative techniques and research teams. He was the core member of the promotions board, rewards and recognition board, rating calibration board and the operating committee of the Research department. He was the semi-finalist of the 100 Club (top 100 performers within a quarter), won the Superstar award and received the nomination for the best manager award.
